Michael P Menz, CIH, CHMM

President and Partner

Michael P. Menz, CIH, CHMM founded Indoor Environmental Concepts (IEC) in 2011, which for a time held his own name, Menz Industrial Hygiene Services. Over the years, his core focus has been professional excellence and mastery in the field, building a company that has become one of the region’s leaders in industrial hygiene and environmental consulting. Providing top level indoor environmental quality evaluations (IEQ), asbestos investigations, silica exposure assessments and mercury in rubberized gymnasium flooring management are just a number of the services he manages regularly. Mike does more than oversee and lead the team projects; he is hands on from start to finish. He performs and is responsible for all aspects of the work to include preparation of sampling strategy and sample result interpretation, lead-based paint consultation and clearance dust examination, and preparing universal hazardous waste inventories.

Key to Mike’s expertise is his commitment to training and on-going education. His certifications speak for themselves as he is one of only a handful of American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) Certified Industrial Hygienist within the MidAtlantic region. The  licensed EPA/Pennsylvania Asbestos Building Inspector and Pennsylvania Management Planner is an Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) Certified Hazardous Material Manager and Pennsylvania Certified Asbestos, Lead, and Hazardous Waste Operations Instructor. He is also a New Jersey Radon Measurement Technician, National Radon Proficiency Provider, Radiation Safety Officer with DOT Certification and EPA RRP Lead Renovator and Dust Sampling Technician. Certifications aside, Mike has countless hours of skills training across the industry spectrum from Asbestos Project Design and Asbestos Building Inspection and Management Planner at Temple University to Hazardous Waste Management and Mold and Moisture Remediation at Rutgers University Cook College to 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Training.

Prior to launching IEC, Mike was the Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager/Radiation Safety Officer at EMSL Analytical, Inc. in Cinnaminson, New Jersey. He spent seven years ensuring organizational safety to include being responsible for proactive safety practices, investigation of injuries, in-house new hire employee and annual safety refresher training.  In his role, Mike also prepared and presented various environmental/industrial hygiene training classes, worked with facility manager and Vice President of Engineering on the design of new laboratory spaces and provided technical support for clients in various areas. Mike’s career also included two decades as General Manager with Synertech, Inc. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he was responsible for daily operations with seventeen (17) employees and approximately 2.75 million dollars in annual sales. As the primary contact, he worked hand-in-hand with clients, such as the Philadelphia School District, Philadelphia Housing Authority, Rohm and Haas Company, LaSalle University, Chestnut Hill Hospital, Mercy Hospital of Philadelphia, U.S Naval Public Works, Roxborough Hospital, and Trigen-Philadelphia Energy Corporation.

Mike is a well-respected professional in the industry and one who actively shares his expertise through writing and presentations. This includes a feature article on indoor air concerns in Today’s Facility Manager.  A regular at many of the regional and national industry conferences, Mike has most recently presented at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference & Expo (AIHce) on Mercury in Rubberized Flooring in May 2020, the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) Convention on Mitigating Emerging Hazards in November 2019 and the  Pennsylvania Governor’s Safety Conference on silica related issues in October 2018.

For Mike, health is not something important only in the workplace. He is one that enjoys physical fitness and playing basketball as well as the relaxation that comes with a day of fishing. As he puts it, “When you have your health, every day is a gift which must not be wasted.” These are more than his words but what inspires Mike to get up and go each morning whether to a work site or an outing with family and friends. It is also the importance on health that makes Mike so good at his profession and applying scientific principles to evaluate and address concerns regarding potential exposures to prevent adverse effects and providing corrective actions. It comes as no surprise to those who know Mike, if he were to be asked what would be his choice for a second career, his short list includes one other role – a pathologist. His love for diagnosing and digging in to find the root cause would make him top in the field.
